It’s time to celebrate! (again)
The biggest celebration in Barcelona is just around the corner. La Mercè Festival starts on September 22nd and it will be several days of cultural and artistic activities like Giant parades, castellers, projection shows, music, street performances and more. What a nice way to goodbye to summer!
Days are cooler, it is true, but in Barcelona we are always willing for a celebration. La Mercè is the biggest party of the year and it is held in honour of Mare de Deu de la Mercè, the Patron Saint of the city. From Friday 22nd to the 25th you can enjoy the activities that congregate near to 2 million inhabitants every year. (See the complete story and details in our post)
This time Barcelona invited the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, as the guest city for 2017. Since the initiative was first launched, all these cities have been guests: Medellin (2007), Quito (2008), Istanbul (2009), Dakar (2010), St. Petersburg (2011), Montreal (2012), Vienna (2013), Stockholm (2014), Buenos Aires (2015) and Paris (2016).
If you don´t know what La Mercé is, you have to learn that the whole of Barcelona will transform itself in a huge scenario where you can see more than 600 performances with local and international artists. It’s really cool!!!The artistic program includes dance, circus, street theater, and music shows.

You can also see the castellers (human towers) and the Giant Parades, Correfoc (spackler firework). There are spectacles from 11 am to 4 am.
As the previous years, The Festival of Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to reach the maximum of districts of the city, That is why last year it included the park of Trinitat as one of the locations in the program. It is a large green area, still very little known, which has a magnificent connection with the metro network.

Useful information: During those days, the temperature will be around the 24°C, nice and warm for being outside. No car is needed (in fact, avoid it because there won’t be parking places), prefer arriving by subway, bike, or walking depending on the area (there will be activities all around the city, from parks, streets, near to the beach, etc.).
